December Market Tendencies
November 29, 2020 | Sage Capone
As the holidays approach, I wanted to give a quick update on market tendencies around this time of year. Investing in December for your Hawaii retirement has historically been a positive return for the market.
Since 1987 from the market close on the Friday after Thanksgiving through year end, 76% of the years have been positive with an average return of the S&P 500 of 1.8%.
The month of December, since 1928, has had the highest proportion of months of any months turning a positive return with 67% of Decembers being positive. The average return for December has been 1.3% or 3rd best since 1928.
We are in the historically strong six months of the year. From November 1st to April 30th. In addition, for this year, November and December have historically performed well in election years.
