  • The Dalbar Study provides reason that Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Investors Should Seek Help

Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Investors

Another successful investor, “Benjamin Graham”, once said “the worst enemy of the investor is most likely himself.”

The DIY approach is increasingly popular in some industries: home repair and renovation, decorating, gardening, and fashion.

However, I don’t believe it’s prudent when it comes to investing.

The 2023 Dalbar Associates QAIB reaffirms past research that investors emotions and behavior can significantly cause investors to underperform the S&P 500 benchmark.

Investors’ natural instincts can be their worst enemy when it comes to investing.

The destructive investment tendencies such as over-confidence, naive diversification, inertia, myopia and irrational decision making provide inadequate assets in retirement for investors.

The Dalbar Associates 2023 study over a 30-year period looks at actual client account returns compared to the equity and bond benchmark.

The study reaffirms that most people should get some help even if it’s not going to be managing the portfolio on an ongoing basis.

Maybe it’s just to establish a financial plan with a Hawaii Financial Advisor to get your investment portfolio set up properly so that you can then take over the management, which studies show will help individuals.

In the study, the S&P 500 averaged 9.65% and the equity fund investor averaged 6.81%.
